Who is Marc Jacobs?

I realize this blog totally sucks. I took one good picture of a Spanish rocker girl at Bread + Butter last summer and between trade show and parties I was lying on my vacation sublet bed in Barcelona and the name street stylish sounded sort of cool so I created this blog with that one picture and this one somewhat catchy name. The blog's increasing suckiness is just further evidence of how uninspiring I find the fashion world. (See girlonthestreet.wordpress.com, my blog that doesn't suck at all but has nothing to do with fashion.)

Fashion media is basically a chore to follow so I don't. I don't care anymore. If there's something specific that comes to me that makes me care, then I am not ruling that out. Like for instance, I thought it was pretty interesting that Vivienne Westwood had seven year olds design her collection and do the pretty scribble scrabble makeup on the models. That shows ingenuity and humor. Humor is what I really find lacking in the fashion world. It takes itself so seriously and its just not the time for such ridiculousness. Fashion for me feels distinctly unfashionable.

Yes, I like to buy pretty clothes. Love it actually! When I'm properly funded, I love to shop and anyway, I like to look at clothes in stores and see how they are merchandised, etc. but to follow it in magazines and in the trades - I feel now its a colossal waste of my energy. In fact it makes me anxious about all the other more important things I could be doing.

What motivated this post is that a new friend of mine, Peter, who is in my writer's group asked, 'who's Marc Jacobs?' when his name came up in conversation. Who's Marc Jacobs???!!! I decided to send him an email with some very important information about Marc Jacobs and I was pretty proud of my off the cuff assessment and thought I'd share it here to help my lame site out a little:

my defintion of marc jacobs :
Marc Jacobs is more a stylist and collage artist than a fashion designer. He takes all of current visual culture's hopes, dreams, and memories and translates them into clothing and accessories. He is the most important living designer because he is the most relevant, wearable, and whimsical hitting the nail on the head most seasons. I would say Jean Paul Gaultier is a better designer (my personal lifelong favorite) but not as influential. (There are plenty of other great designers which I won't name and anyway it's a matter of opinion) but Marc Jacobs sums up the 'trends' and is still something that's fun about an increasingly boring fashion industry.

The end
